Broth and clams are contained in the several types of chowders and in making clam chowder you will need the basics like onions and potatoes occasionally sautéed from salt pork drippings. Regions which have their own unique ways of making chowder are Rhodes Island's clam chowder which has a clear broth, Minorca clam chowder which has a tomato broth base, Outer Banks etc.
Some of the ingredients that are used in making classic chowder, you require olive oil, 1/2 cup white wine, 1/2 cup lemon juice, 3 cups water, 2 cups of heavy cream.
The Other ingredients that you need include 2 smashed garlic cloves, 1 chopped onion, 1 bay leaf, 6 sprigs fresh thyme, 4 slices chopped bacon, 2 Idaho peeled and diced potatoes, 2 minced garlic cloves, common cracker recipe follows, salt and freshly ground black pepper.
